I think it was the funerary architecture. They built their living quarters (even palaces) in mud-brick yet their funerary buildings were built to last forever. Why did they put such store in the afterlife? Having been inside pyramids, temples and necropolis it really makes you wonder why they designed such magnificent tombs!
