» Feature Writer Robert Dailey - The Aeneid

I remember translating the Aeneid as a high school senior. A truly remarkable work. I feel that Virgil rivals Homer in his poetry and use of imagery, although it's obvious that the Aeneid was also an "historical rewrite," what some people would call revisionism, and pointed at tying Rome to ancient Troy. Whether true or not, it gave Rome an heroic ancient past. Nevertheless, it is a classic work.

Well, it's certainly obvious that the Romans revered the Greeks' ancient past to some degree. Just look at Roman myth and their gods, many of whom were taken directly from the Greek pantheon. Nevertheless, I have always felt the the Aeneid stands on its own as a great ancient epic work!
