» Feature Writer Rosemary Drisdelle - I Should Have Taken Latin

Hi Robin,

Latin used to be a required subject here in Nova Scotia, but by the time I got there, you didn't have to take it - and I didn't. I realize now what a mistake it was to think I'd never need to know any Latin. All is not lost however. A few years ago I purchased a book that has come in handy many many times: Latin for the Illiterati by Jon R. Stone (Routledge, 1996). It's a treasure.

Hi Rosemary,

Thanks for your comment! Like I said in my blog post, I am so very glad that I took Latin. I wish that I had taken it in high school, rather than waiting until college. It would have helped in so many academic areas! My son, who is in 2nd grade, is required to take Spanish at his school. While this is certainly a useful language, I think Latin might have been a better choice, especially in learning the nuances of the English language. But that's just my opinion, and I guess it's a little biased! happy

Robin

» Feature Writer Brian Tubbs - Latin & Greek

My dad took Latin in high school - that was his language. His old school no longer offers it. Only Spanish, French, etc.

Since I'm a seminary student, I will have to take some Greek. I'm looking forward to it in one sense (I know it's important and will be interesting), but not in another (it will be hard - I don't like that part). :-)

Yes, I remember Greek being very challenging! But it was a fascinating language to learn, especially when it came to translating Plato and the Old Testament. Good luck in your studies!
