» Feature Writer Rosemary Drisdelle - Homer an Amalgamation?

I'm curious about your statement that Homer is thought to be an amalgamation of many poets - do you mean that there was really no such person as Homer, or that the works of many poets have been wrongly attributed to a real person named Homer? Just curious...

Ancient Greek epic poetry did not begin as a written document. They were tales told by the fire, passed down through generations of storytellers. There is some thought that there was no actual "Homer" the person, but that final drafts of Iliad and Odyssey as we know it were actually the culmination of many years of storytelling, perhaps put to paper by one person, a scribe of sorts, and attributed to a person named Homer as the author. There are some, of course, who believe that Homer was a real person, and that he was the true author of the epic poems.

I hope that clears it up for you! Thanks for your comment!
