Definition of the glossary term Hermes

Hermes was known as the messenger of the Greek gods. He was also the god of commerce, of boundaries and travellers, and shepherds. His parents were Zeus and Maia.

Attributes: A petasus (winged hat), sandals, and a caduceus (winged staff with serppents wrapped around it).

Hermes was the conductor of the dead, and a protector of heroes, merchants, and thieves. Throughout Ancient Greece, boaundaryies were marked with Herms, pillar-like statuary representations of the god.

Roman name: Mercury
