Definition of the glossary term Atlas

In Greek mythology, Atlas was a Titan. When Atlas sided with the Titans in their war with the Olympian Gods (known as the Titanomachy), and the Titans were defeated, Atlas was forced to serve an eternal punishment. Zeus forced Atlas to stand at the edge of the Earth and hold up the heavens on his shoulders for all time.
