Definition of the glossary term Apollo

Apollo was the Greek god of the sun, of shepherds and musicians, and of prophecy. His parents were Zeus and Leto, and he had a twin sister, Artemis.

Attributes: the bow, quiver, lyre, and laurel

His patron city was Delphi, where his worship extended to the famous Oracle of Delphi. Here, people from throughout the Greek world would come to learn their fates and fortunes from priestesses who would be entranced by the smoke of a burning laurel (or bay).

Because he was the god of musicians, Apollo was always accompanied by the 9 muses.

Roman name: Apollo
