Definition of the glossary term Amazons

The Amazons were a mythical society of females, fiercely independent and warrioir-like, that lived in Pontus (a region in modern Turkey).

No men were allowed to live in the region of the Amazons. In order to keep their population up, they paid an annual visit to the nearby Gargarean tribe. All male children were kept with their fathers; female children lived with the mothers and trained to be Amazons.

The mythology of the Amazons might have some factual basis, in an ancient society known as the Sarmatians. These people of western Scythia (eastern Europe) were known as a matriarchal society early in their history, and the women ejoyed many freedoms, including the ability to participate in combat.
