Definition of the glossary term praetorian guard
The Praetorian Guard was a group of men who acted as bodyguards to the Roman Emperors. They were highly skilled and revered warriors. The Guard was created under Emperor Augustus around 2 B.C.
The Guard was often involved in many dishonorable plots, and even assassinated a few of the Empeoros, including Caligula, Galba, and Pertinax.
The term Praetorian comes from the Latin praetor, or the commanding general of the army.
