Tarquinia was an ancient Etruscan city, also known as Tarquinii. Located on the west central coast of Italy, it was the principal city in the twelve cities of Etruria in the fourth century B.C. After failed attempts to overthrow the early Roman kings, the city eventually lost its power to the Roman Republic, and never regained its prominence.
