Definition of the glossary term Mesopotamia
Mesopotamia was a region of the Middle East, located between the Tigris and Euphrates Rivers, that is today part of Iraq. The term comes from the Greek meso "between" and potamus "river". Also known as the Fertile Crescent, this area was home to several prominent ancient civilizations, including the Sumerians, Assyrians, and Persians. Some of these cultures revolutionized agriculture, city planning, architecture and construction, law, language, and the written alphabet.
