Archon is a term that comes from the Greek, meaning "to rule". In ancient Greece, the head judicial officer of each city-state, or polis, was known as the archon. In Ancient Athens, there were three archons in office that held their posts together. These were the archon basileus, archon eponymous, and archon polemarch.
