Definition of the glossary term Polis
From the Greek for "city-state", a polis was first developed during the Archaic period of greek history, and the concept was the precursor for our own city today. An ancient polis would have consisted of an agora (marketplace), an acropolis (higher ground, religious center), and a gymnasium. Related terms: Magistrate Related articles:
