Definition of the glossary term peplos
A peplos was a garment worn by Ancient Greek women at the height of the Classical period (the 4th and 5th centuries B.C.). Essentially it was a robe, fashioned to appear as two pieces of clothing, a top and an ankle-length skirt, from a tubular cloth that was folded creatively.
During the Panathenaic Procession, a large ceremonial peplos was presented to the cult statue of Athena, located insode the Parthenon, every 4 years.
